YA Fantasy – 4 stars

OK, so I gave this a 4 more because of my love for the series, rather than this book. I didn’t write a review immediately after reading it because I would have given it a disappointing 2 stars, which may not have been fair. This book is in deep need of an editor, but the bones of the story are still solid. There were so many times where the characters casually flopped on pillows, or stuck out their tongues at each other, or had a flirty interchange, that the book started feeling like a late 90’s teen movie. This book could have been driven by political intrigue, epic battles, and deeper character development (and to some extent it was), but it fell into the trap of so many other YA fantasy series and started to dwell on the cheap thrill of exploring the sex lives of a bunch of good-looking immortal creatures. There is totally a time and a place for that, but it was disappointing that that element overshadowed more substantive plot lines. Oh and Lucien- what the hell happened to him for half of the book?
